Who Should Take AP English Literature and Composition?
I am reminded of a smart remark a former chemistry teaching colleague would make when students would protest having to write complete sentences in science classes, arguing that "This is not English class." He would respond: "It's all English." And it is true...all college bound students need not only to write well, but they need to be able to write and read the English language at a sophisticated level that will ensure them success in not only English classes but in history, science, and humanities classes as well.
What Do Students Learn in AP Literature?
Students learn how to read complex texts by learning how to recognize sophisticated and complex ideas and concepts within literature. They also learn how to write about those ideas in probing and analytic ways. Finally, they learn to become comfortable writing extemporaneous essays under a timed circumstance.
